Uric acid is waste product produced as a result of beak down of purines that are found in some food stuffs like beef, liver, alcoholic drinks Etc...  
Normally the purines are broke down in liver to uric acids and are send to blood stream. Then it is excreted through kidneys. High uric acid or hyperuricemia will lead to a painful joint condition called gout and painful kidney stones.

Hyperuricemia is linked with type2diabetes mellitus, obesity, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases.



Causes for high uric acid:

High uric acid level in blood can be due to two reasons
   1)      High purine diet: Taking foods that are high in purines can cause high uric acid in blood.
   2)      Kidney problems: Is some cases kidneys are unable to excrete the metabolized purines (that is uric acid) through urine.
   3)      Fasting or rapid weight loss can temporarily elevate uric acid levels.

Normal reference ranges:

It can vary according to the units used your by labs.
  • Men: 3.4–7.0mg/dL
  • Women: 2.4–6.0 mg/dL



Tips to manage high uric acid level

Limit or avoid alcoholic drinks: Alcoholic drinks especially beer and wines are high in purines that will cause high uric acid in your blood. If you have gout or hyperuricemia, avoid alcohol completely.  Alcohol interferes with elimination of uric acid also.
Lose your weight (not abruptly): high uric acid level in liked with obesity. Lose your weight. Fast and strict weight loss also increases your uric acid level. So do not crush your diet to lose weight.

Drink plenty of water: Keep your body hydrated. Water dilutes uric acids in the body and stimulates the kidneys to expel them. A minimum of 8 glassed of water is recommended.  Try to drink small amount of water regularly. It also helps to expel toxins from your body.

Foods that are high in purine which cause hyperuricemia:

·         Some seas foods: Some of the see foods are high in purines. Tuna, anchovies and herrings are examples.
·         Meat: beef and liver have high purines in them. Avoid it if you are suffering from gout.
·         Beer: Avoid alcoholic drinks especially beer. Wine is relatively safe still it is better to avoid.
·         Sugary drinks: avoid drinks with high fructose corn syrups. It increases uric acids in your blood.
·         Some vegetables: Vegetables like asparagus, spinach, cauliflower and mushrooms are high in purines. But you really don’t have to avoid them completely.


Home remedies for high uric acid and Gout





Cherries: Cherries prevent inflammation. Anthocyanins contained in cherries can prevent the uric acid to form crystals. 15 to 20 cherries per day is recommended if you have gout. It prevents gout flare ups.


Lemon: As we all know lemon contain high in vitamin C. Vitamin C is a known remedy for gout. The high level of citric acid in the lemon can expel the uric acid crystals through kidneys. Juice of 1 to 2 lemons in a glass of cool water in the morning is recommended.

Ginger root: Ginger in an anti-inflammatory home remedy which is widely used. It can reduce gout inflammations too. Ginger contains a few different anti-inflammatory substances, including gingerols and shogaol, according to a review article published in the "International Journal of Preventative Medicine" in April 2013.

Apple cider vinegar: ACV is a natural detoxifier and cleanser. It helps to remove uric acid from blood. Malic acid contained in ACV helps to do this work in our body. 1 tsp ACV in a glass of water tow times a day in recommended.

Bananas: bananas helps you to reduce your high uric acid level as it is rich in vitamin C. Bananas assist in converting uric acid into liquid form which can then be filtered by the kidneys and excreted through your urine avoiding the crystallization in your joints

Apple: Malic acid in apples neutralizes uric acid and gives relief for gout sufferers. Eat an apple after every meal you eat. You can drink apple juices if you do not like raw apple.



Complex carbohydrates: Chose whole grains, more fruits and vegetables than refined carbohydrates like white bread and cakes. 

Dairy products: Low fat milk and dairy products has low serum urate levels. Orotic acid contained in skimmed milk prevent re-absorption of uric acid, hence prevents gout. Add yogurt to your diet.  Drink 2 glasses of skim milk a day.

  1. I have been bothered with Gout and high Uric acid levels.
    The medication provided by my doctor did not agree with my system and I ended up with Steven Johnson syndrome. (Not Good)
    I take 1/2 teaspoon of Baking soda 3 times daily mixed in some water and this is enough to keep my system alkaline enough to keep the Gout away.
